Culture Awards 2006

The winners of this year's Journal Culture Awards were announced at Northern Stage Newcastle on Monday March 31, 2008. Our panel of judges had the difficult task of deciding upon the overall winner for each of the award categories. The winners and finalists for each category are as follows:

Artist of the Year
  • Winner - Liv Lorent, Tyneside-based choreographer
  • Emma Holliday, Tyneside-based painter
  • Julian Germain, Northumberland-based photographer
Performance of the Year
  • Winner - The Pitman Painters, Live Theatre, Newcastle
  • Tattercoats, Northern Stage, Newcastle
  • Tonic, Open Clasp Theatre Company, regional tour
Newcomer of the Year
  • Winner - Katie Doherty, singer
  • Nikita Asher, classical Indian dancer
  • Paul Knox, photographer
Best Event Durham
  • Winner - Durham Literature Festival 2007
  • Art Garden Exhibition & Festival
  • Illuminate 2007
Best Event Northumberland
  • Winner - Picture House @ Belsay
  • Berwick upon Tweed Film Festival 2007
  • Northumberland Lights
Best Event Sunderland
  • Winner - The City Sings
  • Re-launch of Monkwearmouth Station Museum
