Casanova

DATE 18/10/3005 VENUE Arts Centre TICKETS £8.50 (discounts £6.50)

In their latest untrue and comic reworking of a classic legend, Ophaboom take on the infamous, scandalous and scurrilous character of Casanova. Following premiere performances at Unity Theatre Liverpool, the show embarks on a ten week tour, taking in twenty-four venues across England and Scotland.

Using their unique style of hilarious half-masked madness, this international touring company presents the story as you’ve never known it before. Thwarted love, unpaid debts and daring deception all collide spectacularly as Ophaboom take liberties with history.

This multi-talented group has been described as the theatrical answer to The Simpsons. They can always be relied on to bring laughter to all ages at their shows with their blend of bawdy physicality and witty word play.

Ophaboom have worked with Perrier nominated writer Owen Powell, who co-wrote their 2004 show Burke & Hare, and long-time collaborators Ninnian Kinnear-Wilson and John Broadbent, to create this new romantic comedy for everyone.

2 for 1 tickets for Riot: South Shields 1930

2 for 1 tickets for Riot: South Shields 1930 SEVENTY-FIVE years ago the troubled Yemeni seamen of South Shields rioted. Bones were broken, a police officer was stabbed and in the aftermath 20 Yemenis were deported from the country.

Now one of their grandchildren is bringing the story back to life at The Customs House theatre in South Shields. The grandfather of local director Darren Palmer was in the Seamen's Minority Movement, which played an active part in the 1930 riot.

Riot: South Shields 1930, by Peter Mortimer, opens at The Customs House on October 24, just yards from the where the action took place all those years ago.

It is told through a classic tale of love against the odds - between a retired sailor's daughter and a Yemeni immigrant.

Their fight for acceptance mirror's Darren’s own family history - his grandfather married a young South Shields girl.
What happens next leads to bloodshed on the banks of the Tyne, a little-known but landmark event that is only now being told on stage for the first time.

Riot: South Shields 1930 runs from October 24 to October 28 at 7.30pm, with a 2.30pm matinee on Wednesday October 26 and Friday October 28.

We are offering culture club members the chance to get 2 for 1 on ALL tickets for all performances (except the Wednesday matinee) at The Customs House.

Don't miss your chance to see this moving and powerful play.

These boots are made for walking.....

These boots are made for walking..... Ever since we ran our hugely successful Culture Club day out in Hadrian's Wall Country we have been bombarded with requests from members wanting us to organise more outdoor events. And who are we to deny you what you want?

We've teamed up with a great little company Shepherds Walks to organise a fantastic guided walk in the Northumbrian countryside exclusively for Culture Club members.

Jon Monks was a full time hill shepherd and has worked and lived in Northumberland for fourteen years. As a keen walker Jon noticed the lack of walks in the area and as a personal hobby he started to write down the walks as he walked them. He then researched them in local libraries and on the internet.

In 1999 he created a website www.shepherdswalks.co.uk and has since expanded it to include walks in Northumberland, Cumbria and the Borders plus an online store. He has sold thousands of walking guides all over the world and regularly runs guided walks for members of the public.

What makes his walks unique is that he writes them from a shepherd's perspective and uses his knowledge of the countryside to make every walk a better experience for those exploring the different areas.

Earlier this year Shepherds walks moved to Kirkharle Courtyard, the birth place of Capability Brown and from here he not only retails his own walking guides but many more related products.

Jon will lead our exclusive Culture Club walk on Saturday 12th November 2005, starting 1.00 pm. It will begin outside the Shepherds Walks Shop at Kirkharle Courtyard (grid reference - NZ 013825). If you are travelling north up the A696 Kirkharle Courtyard is clearly sign posted approximately one mile before you pass the village of Kirkwhelpington. The walk is 5 miles long (8km) and estimated walking time is 2 ½ hours.

The walk explores the Kirkharle Estate, with its contrasting landscape. Initially it follows a recently opened permissive route, which takes you along a tree-lined avenue that is quite breathtaking. You then gradually climb and look down on the hamlet of Kirkwhelpington with St Bartholomews church standing tall.

The walk is wonderfully varied and gives a great insight in to the working estate at Kirkharle. The route is good under foot, but strong shoes are recommended.

After the walk you may purchase refreshments in the recently opened 'Loraine Room' at Kirkharle Courtyard. During refreshments Jon Monks, the Shepherd of Shepherds Walks will talk a little about the countryside you have walked through and relate some of the amusing stories about the early years of Shepherds Walks.
