This week's offer

Buy a ticket to hear the Northern Sinfonia at The Sage Gateshead – and get one free!

We’ve teamed up with The Sage Gatehead to give Culture Club members this great opportunity to purchase tickets for the forthcoming Northern Sinfonia concerts at a specially negotiated price.

If you buy a ticket for the concert on Thursday May 26 you can claim another one for the concert on Saturday June 4, 2005 - absolutely FREE.

Northern Sinfonia Thursday 26 May, Hall One, 7.30pm
Thomas Adès: Conductor
Thomas Adès: Chamber Symphony, Nancarrow: Three Movements for Chamber Orchestra, Ives: Three Places in New England, Beethoven: Symphony no.4

Thomas Adès’ meteoric rise to international prominence in less than ten years has been astonishing. He is in demand all over the world as a composer, conductor and pianist. The music is by four very different composers, all of whom were ahead of their time.

Adès’s own Chamber Symphony was the piece which first brought him recognition, written for his final exams when a student – an exceptional work from a young composer. Conlon Nancarrow spent his life writing music for player piano, but towards the end of his career did compose for orchestra. His music was so rhythmically complex that it was often regarded as ‘unplayable’.

Music by Ives and Beethoven, both musical mould-breakers of their time, completes the programme.

Northern Sinfonia , New Jazz - Old Spirits. Saturday 4th June, Hall One, 7.30pm

Clark Rundell: Conductor, Tim Garland: Saxophone, Hannah Jones: Singer, Gwylim Simcock: Piano, Acoustic Triangle Lighthouse

Internationally acclaimed composer/saxophonist Tim Garland presents a night of jazz that acknowledges the debt owed to the great jazz innovators (Ellington, Mingus, Miles Davis, and the gospel singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe) and introduces new compositions that keep their exhilarating pioneering spirit alive.

The programme features sets by Acoustic Triangle and Lighthouse – two of the most innovative small ensembles in contemporary jazz – and soul diva Hannah Jones. The centrepiece is the premiere of a jazz piano concerto based on the poetry of Ben Okri.

Raise a glass at the first Culture Club wine tasting event

The evening will begin at 6.30 and promises to be informative, but also fun. It will be suitable for beginners so anyone having doubts about their wine tasting ability need not worry!

The tasting will feature wine from the Ribera del Duero area of Spain, which lies north of Madrid and south of the Cantabrian Mountains. There will be eight wines featured, 3 whites and 5 reds from the Spanish Spirit portfolio from three separate wine-growing regions. Each wine will be accompanied with a short discussion about the type of wine, grape variety and production method. Background information about the different wine-growing region, types of grapes, climate and specific information about the vineyard will also be given.
Each person attending will receive a set of tasting notes and feedback about each will wine will be encouraged.
For more information on Spanish Spirit please visit www.spanishspirit.com

The event will be held at The Cooperage, situated on the Quayside, Newcastle. This is the second oldest building still in regular use in the city. Since its construction in the 15th century it has been a merchant's dwelling, a mayoral residence, a warehouse, and of course a barrel factory (cooperage). Now the Cooperage public house, it is an atmospheric building with lots of character - perfect for this sort of event.

Our wine tasting session should finish at around 8.30pm. The Cooperage does however stock many of the wines that you’ll taste on the night so members are free to stay on and put their new-found skills to the test (assuming that you can remember them of course!)

This event is FREE to Culture Club members. One guest may also accompany each member for free.
