Invitation to exclusive Vic Reeves preview

Leading Northern art dealers Opus welcome comedian and artist Vic Reeves as he exhibits a selection of his paintings and drawings at their gallery on Shakespeare Street. The show marks the national release of Reeves’ latest prints and with the launch being attended by the artist himself represents something of a coup for Opus.

As fans of Vic Reeves might expect, his art works mix the surreal and the mundane in a seriously amusing way. Ram-raiding disparate sources of contemporary iconography from celebrities to wildlife and explosives, Reeves’ playfully deranged works are held together by their stylistic tact and control.

“Birds of the UK and Other Stuff” sees a collection of 12 new lithographs by the artist and comic, taken from a recent body of work that focuses on real and fictional birds, some of which appear in amusing fabricated situations with celebrities.

The new lithographs published by Eyestorm are in an edition of 50 and signed and numbered by the artist. Prices start at £295 and are available in the North East exclusively at Opus in Newcastle. The show runs from 10th February until 4th March 2006.

The Journal Culture Club are offering four lucky Culture Club members the chance to attend premiere of Vic Reeves’ exhibition which will be attended by Vic himself. The premiere is to be held on Thursday 9th February where there will be complimentary drinks and the opportunity to buy any of Vic’s work should it catch your eye. This event is strictly by invitation only.

Opus, 16 Shakespeare Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. Opening times of the gallery are Monday to Saturday 10.00am – 5.30pm. Opus 0191 260 3399, enquiries@opus-art.com.

Exclusive invitation to view extra Spencer Tunick piece

Exclusive invitation to view extra Spencer Tunick piece It has been hard to miss the excitement surrounding the current Spencer Tunick exhibition at Baltic – the controversial naked photographs. But many of you will not know about a unique piece featuring a further 1700 naked people at Newcastle International Airport.

The piece is presented as part of the BALTIC exhibition, which is sponsored by Newcastle International and has been a phenomenal success to date, with a record number of over 10,000 visitors to the exhibition in its first week.

The giant image, set against the striking and iconic Sage Gateshead, is exclusive to the Airport and cannot be seen in the main exhibition at BALTIC. Located in International Arrivals, the picture has turned many passengers’ heads as they find a surprising and unusual welcome to the North East!

Newcastle International’s sponsorship of the exhibition is the first time the Airport has supported the arts and reflects its commitment to the culture-led regeneration of the North East.

Newcastle International Airport and BALTIC would like to invite three lucky Culture Club members and their guests to an exclusive viewing of the Spencer Tunick artwork at 3pm on Thursday February 23, 2006 at the airport. Invitees will enjoy afternoon tea and a representative from BALTIC will talk about the exhibition and the contribution made by Newcastle International.

The Rivals at Theatre Royal – 2 for 1 ticket offer

The Rivals at Theatre Royal – 2 for 1 ticket offer Theatre Royal Newcastle is proud to present Stephanie Cole and Edward Hardwicke in Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s classic play, The Rivals, which runs from Monday 6 – Saturday 11 February.
Set in Bath during the course of one day in 1775, this delightful period romp introduces Mrs Malaprop, one of the funniest misusers of words in the British theatre, the inspiration for the word ‘malapropism’ and a truly great comic creation.
Even though her niece, Lydia, is ‘as headstrong as an allegory on the banks of the Nile’, Mrs Malaprop is determined to match her with a husband of her own choosing. But Lydia has a penchant for romantic novels and has fallen in love with poor ensign Beverley. The good news is that Beverley is actually Captain Jack Absolute, playing below his rank in order to win her heart, much to the bemusement of his father, Sir Anthony, whom Mrs Malaprop describes as ‘an absolute misanthropy’.
Playing the exuberant Mrs Malaprop will be Stephanie Cole, one of Britain’s favourite actresses. Her diverse television roles include Tenko, Doc Martin and Waiting For God (for which she won Best Actress in the British Comedy Awards). On stage she has enjoyed great success in A Passionate Woman and Quartet in the West End and the tour of So Long Life.
Sir Anthony will be played by Edward Hardwicke, famed for his illustrious TV and film career which has spanned more than 50 years. TV roles include The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Alchemists and David Copperfield. Film credits include Parting Shots, Love Actually and Roman Polanski’s recent adaptation of Oliver Twist.

The Rivals is directed by award-winning director Christopher Morahan who has worked extensively at the National Theatre. His work also includes the film Clockwise and acclaimed television serial The Jewel In The Crown.

The Rivals appears at Theatre Royal Newcastle from Monday 6 – Saturday 11 February. Tickets are priced at £5.00 - £20.00 and can be purchased from the Theatre Royal Booking Office on 0870 905 5060 or online at www.theatreroyal.co.uk
