Enjoy an evening at Beamish

Enjoy an evening at Beamish Award-winning Beamish, The North of England Open Air Museum, recently launched its most intriguing and fascinating attraction to date when it opened the “brand new” Masonic Temple in its 1913 Town Street. The Masonic Temple provides a unique and exciting insight into the world of the Freemasons in 1913, revealing some of their secrets. If you’ve ever wondered why the Masons roll up their trouser legs, have a secret handshake and what they do in those mysterious Masonic meetings, then find out more at Beamish during our exclusive Culture Club evening visit on Wednesday June 14.

The popular open air museum - an authentic living and working experience of life in the early 1800s and 1900s - has recreated the Temple to show the important role the Masons played in the period and to unravel many of the mysteries and myths surrounding them! Beamish has been working closely with the Freemasons in the development of the £1million Temple (co-funded by them) to ensure there is complete authenticity in the recreation of the building and its contents, focusing on Craft Freemasonry.)

The fine frontage of the new Masonic Hall attraction came from a ‘real life’ old Masonic Hall in Sunderland which housed 17 Masonic lodges. The frontage was painstakingly taken down to preserve it and rebuilt brick by brick in the Town Street at Beamish. You’ll find out too about the techniques and traumas of dismantling and re-erecting historic buildings such as the Masonic Temple from one of the Museum’s own expert historians. And there’ll be a guided tour of the authentic interior of the stunning Masonic Temple, which is complete with a marble black and white chequer floor, fantastic gothic fireplace and Masonic paintings. The building also houses other traditional Masonic rooms, including a Robing Room, Tyler’s Room and Museum room upstairs.

The evening begins at 6pm when you will need to be at Beamish main visitor car park and then catch the tram to the 1913 Town Street. Enjoy a talk called “Moving House” –explaining the techniques and traumas of dismantling and re-erecting historic buildings and a Guided Tour of the Masonic Temple by the expert mainly responsible for the fitting out of the building. Then at 7.30pm visit the 1913 Sun Inn pub for a finger buffet and refreshments (pay bar) and an opportunity to catch up with fellow Culture Club members. At 8.00pm you will then catch the tram back to the main visitor car park.

There are 40 spaces available on the tour, which has been specially organised for Culture Club members.

2 for 1 tickets to see Romeo and Juliet

2 for 1 tickets to see Romeo and Juliet The Eden Theatre in Bishop Auckland is offering Culture Club members an amazing two for one offer on tickets to see Romeo and Juliet on Thursday June 8 2006 at 7.30pm.

This is the world’s most famous love story -it is related by fourteen compositions in two acts, performed by a live jazz octet, two dancers and a singer who draw the audience through the play to its tragic and emotional conclusion.

Enjoy this collaboration between North East composer and jazz saxophonist James Harvey Russell and London based choreographer and contemporary dancer Marie Lawrence. Critically acclaimed, this piece of live theatre was originally commissioned by the Peoples Theatre, with support from the Arts Council NE and performed most recently at the Bath Shakespeare Festival. The only piece of live music in an otherwise literary festival.

James and Marie hope to tour International Festivals next year with Romeo and Juliet and are collaborating on a new and exciting project at the moment to be premiered in the North East later this year.

Marie recently finished touring with Sakoba who are based in Newcastle upon Tyne, and is currently choreographing a number of projects in London. James is also spending some of his time in London, songwriting and producing for soon to be released albums, and has recently been published by Darah Music.

They always return to the North East to work on projects, where they find the facilities and positive attitude towards their work second to none.
