This week's offer

Art in the Garden

We have teamed up with Frances Thirlway Fine Art to invite Culture Club members to attend the preview of Art in the Garden, a spectacular show in the beautiful gardens of medieval Crook Hall in Durham City.

'Art in the Garden' has been running for six years now, but this year will be the biggest yet, with exciting new work by twenty different artists. The show includes specially commissioned site-specific installations inspired by this year’s theme - Peter Greenaway’s arthouse film ‘The Draughtsman’s Contract’. This sensational outdoor show combines 21st-century art with a late 17th-century theme, in a 14th-century setting - and you could be at the opening!

The preview event takes place between 6 and 8pm on Saturday 29th July. As well as the chance to view sculpture and installations outside, and paintings and drawings inside, guests can wander round the walled gardens, the maze, the Shakespeare Garden and other areas at their leisure. There will be free drinks in the gardens (inside if wet), live music, a screening of the film which inspired the show, and a chance to hear Michael Nyman's new recording of the soundtrack to the film, 'The composer's cut'. Most of the works shown are for sale and suitable for outdoor display.

Included in the show are emerging artists based in the North East such as Claire Morgan and Matthew Cowan, as well as sculptors well known for their public commissions such as David Gross and William Pym. There'll also be artists from outside the region, including Brad Downey and Tahu Deans from London/New York, as well as Wendy Hardie and Anna Perch Nielsen from Edinburgh. For more information on the artists, see www.francesthirlwayfineart.co.uk

This event is perfect for a Summer's evening.

All Journal Culture Club members can also claim 25% discount on the admission price to Crook Hall & Gardens for the duration of the exhibition (July 30th to August 31st, 2006), on production of their membership card. Opening times are 11am to 5pm, Wednesday to Sunday, normal price before discount is £4.50. www.crookhallgardens.co.uk

Taakin’ Heeds at The Gala Theatre

Taakin’ Heeds at The Gala Theatre The Gala Theatre are delighted to invite Culture Club members to a ‘pay what you like night’ for their new production of Taakin’ Heeds - a terrific collection of three brand new short plays, told by three very different, very colourful Geordie characters. Members will also be treated to an exclusive pre show talk by writer Arthur McKenzie, and a pre-show tour around the set by designer Lucy Campbell. This promises to be a great evening with a truly regional flavour.

Directed by Simon Stallworthy, with an affectionate nod to Alan Bennett, the 3 stories are wonderfully rich and entertaining, with the depth and humour Bennett’s original tales, but with a distinct local feel.

Stalls Only features Ernest Holloway Burton, a dapper man in his sixties who would have us believe that he once treaded the boards. The toilet attendant in the last Victorian toilets to exist in Newcastle, we join him on his last day as he reflects on the people he has met.

In Gymboy, we meet Bob (alias The Sunbed Soldier) who runs a small gym, which is his domain. Aged around 50, he thinks he’s god’s gift to the ladies. He likes to keep the gym exclusive - no riff raff - but invites his mates, with their many ailments, reminding Bob that he’s not actually as young as he likes to think.

The Plot introduces Frankie Wheatstone, a retired Policeman whose pride and joy is his allotment… except that his new life is not free from crime. A cop of the old school, Frankie suspects that a former villain who has the adjacent allotment is slashing his leeks. So a plot is hatched to catch the criminal.

The Gala Theatre have secured the services of three of this region’s most experienced and talented character actors, who bring their knowledge, wisdom and life experience to the three roles.

David Whitaker was instrumental in the early days of Live Theatre and has also worked extensively with the RSC. Donald McBride is another accomplished North East actor, who was seen most recently (alongside David) in Live Theatre’s hugely successful A Nightingale Sang in Eldon Square. And last but not least, Jack McBride has appeared in most of the major TV and film productions made in the region over the last two decades.

Writer Arthur McKenzie is a great storyteller, with a wealth of anecdotes from his life and career and a uniquely Geordie sense of humour. Funny, touching, eloquent and clever, these three plays are rooted in the heart of the North East, and combine to make a terrific evening’s entertainment.

We have secured 30 places for Culture Club members on Thursday July 6th when the theatre is holding a ‘pay what you like’ night.

Event is limited to 30 places. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis, subject to availability. Tickets for the performance and the pre-show talks will be available to collect from the box office upon arrival. Guests are encouraged to pay whatever they feel appropriate on the night. The talks begin at 6pm.

encouraged to dress to impress - think Moulin Rouge glamour, 1920s flapper dancers,
and old Chicago gangster chic.

It's sure to be a fantastic night, so don't miss out!
