Hertfordshire Chorus - The Burning Road and A Sea Symphony Saturday July 14, 2007 at The Sage Gateshead, Hall One (7:30pm) Hertfordshire Chorus, under the direction of David Temple, is one of the country’s finest large choirs, performing regularly in top London venues. This is the Chorus’s first appearance at The Sage Gateshead, performing Will Todd’s Jarrow March work, The Burning Road and the magnificent A Sea Symphony by Vaughan Williams. Hertfordshire Chorus will be joined by the Durham Sinfonia and 120 children from Corbridge Middle School, Morpeth Chantry Middle School and Ponteland Middle School.
The Burning Road is a moving and inspiring work, commissioned by Northampton Bach Choir in 1996 to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Jarrow March. Both the composer (Will Todd) and the driving force behind the commission (Hertfordshire Chorus Musical Director, David Temple) are from the North East. Will Todd writes: “I grew up in the north east of England in the seventies. The Jarrow March of 1936 was a part of folklore and a local legend. I remember a friend of my mum’s pointing to an elderly man in the Market Place in Durham and saying ‘he was on the March’, meaning the great Jarrow Protest March. 200 men walked to London in a little under three weeks to hand in a petition to Parliament, in the hope that the Government would recognise their plight. In north eastern legend the men of the March were, and still are, heroes who stood up proudly to make a bold physical and political statement to the people of Britain.”
The magnificent A Sea Symphony is a monumental setting of the poetry of Walt Whitman. It conjures dramatic musical pictures of the ocean: the water’s ‘limitless, heaving breast’, the ‘motley procession’ of the waves, the ‘whistling winds’ and ‘dashing spray’, the stillness of the beach at night, the ships and the unnamed heroes steering them. And with the pictures come the many moods of the sea, powerfully evoked in the majestic music.
Culture Club members can claim 20% off every £20 ticket purchased. There is also a pre-concert talk with Will Todd, Ben Dunwell and David Temple (free to all ticket holders) at 6:30pm.

From Thursday July 26, 2007 the Literary and Philosophical Society stages The Fever – a play by Wallace Shawn. Culture Club members can get purchase tickets for half price with this great offer.
“A hotel bathroom in a hot country where nobody speaks your language is the location for a breakdown which is to change your life, one bead of sweat at a time”. The Fever investigates the intense response of a privileged liberal aesthete to the realisation that it is not possible to continue living a vacuous cosmopolitan lifestyle in the face of economic inequality. The ghostly figure of the narrator, played by David Metcalf, seizes the opportunity to revisit an earlier re-incarnation of himself and to witness his own journey through mental breakdown. Bekki French’s emotionally charged and physically intense performance explores a fragile soul in conflict with her demons.
‘The Fever’ is directed by James Ryland, who has turned his attention from appearing in such films as 'The Matchmaker' and 'Waking Ned' to directing this challenging piece of theatre.
“As a response to higher than expected demand for tickets The Lit and Phil has joined forces with it’s neighbour The Mining institute to facilitate and host the production and the company wish to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of these organisation’s staff in supporting our joint vision of presenting vital and intelligent theatre to a the North East audience. It has been a delight to work within these magnificent buildings and we hope that our production will further encourage visitors to explore what are unique landmarks in our industrial and cultural heritage.”
Wallace Shawn is an Obie-winning playwright and a celebrated stage and screen actor. His plays include The Designated Mourner, Marie and Bruce, and Aunt Dan and Lemon. He co-wrote and starred in the art-house classic My Dinner with Andre and he also performed in numerous Woody Allen films including Manhattan and Radio Days.
Helictite Orchestra will be performing a live score featuring sitars and percussion and visual artist Colin Lee will be using subtly morphing projected images.
All profits from 'The Fever" will be donated to The Literary and Philosophical Society's book fund, The Mining Institute and Charities appropriate to the themes of the play.
The play runs for 3 nights, from Thursday July 26 to Saturday July 28, 2007 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £4 but Culture Club members pay only £2 for all performances.

Amelia Joicey introduces a month of mystery and intrigue that you are either going to love or hate. In either case you will want to vehemently discuss and share your response with others as August’s book group reads The Dumas Club by Arturo Perez-Reverte.
In the world of rare books everything has its price. But when the book is a satanic tract, the currency is not money but life. A well-know bibliophile is found hanged days after selling a rare manuscript of Alexander Dumas's classic, The Three Musketeers. Across Madrid, Spain's wealthiest book dealer has finally laid his hands on a 17th-century manual for summoning the devil. Lucas Corso, solitary and obsessive, is the detective hired to authenticate both texts. But the further he follows the trail of devil worship, the more it leads him back to Dumas. He's the unwitting protagonist in someone's evil plot, but is he sleuth or hero, Sherlock Holmes or d'Artagnan?
Arturo Perez-Reverte was born in Cartagena in 1951. Since the publication of The Fencing Master, his first novel, Perez-Reverte has become one of Europe's bestselling authors. The Flanders Panel was awarded the Grand Prix Annuel de Litt-rature Polici-re in France. His novel The Dumas Club, has been made into the film The Ninth Gate by Roman Polanski, which stars Johnny Depp.
Reviews: ‘A dizzyingly complicated, dazzlingly allusive, breathlessly exciting novel of adventure and detection’ Michael Kerrigan, Scotsman
'A sophisticated and exciting intellectual game which brilliantly illustrates the sheer delight of fiction' Stephanie Merritt, Daily Telegraph
The book group will meet on Wednesday August 1, 2007 in The Byker Vista Café, The Biscuit Factory, Stoddart Street, Newcastle from 6pm to 7.30pm. Readers are expected to source their own copy of the book.
Once again this year we have teamed up with Frances Thirlway Fine Art to invite Culture Club members to attend the preview of Art in the Garden, a spectacular show in the beautiful gardens of medieval Crook Hall in Durham City. 'Art in the Garden' has been running for seven years now and is known for intriguing artwork in carefully chosen settings. This year's theme is the tercentenary of renowned Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus, the father of plant classification, known to all Swedish children as the 'Prince of Flowers'. Ten North East-based artists have taken inspiration from his work, with the results ranging from golden apples to giant butterflies - and you could be at the opening! The preview event takes place between 6 and 8pm on Saturday 14th July. There will be a guided tour of the artworks and gardens, as well as free drinks and the chance to wander round the walled gardens, the maze, the Shakespeare Garden and other areas. All the work shown is for sale. Included in the show are emerging artists based in the North East such as recent graduate Laura MacFarlane, as well as long-time local favourites such as David Gross, whose work created a sensation at the Affordable Art Fair in London earlier this year. This event is perfect for a summer evening, but refreshments will be served in the medieval hall if it rains.

Poetry – what are your feelings about it?
“Most people ignore most poetry because most poetry ignores most people”. Adrian Mitchell 1932- : Poems (1964)
“Prose = words in their best order; poetry = the best words in the best order.” Samuel Taylor Coleridge 1772-1834: Table Talk (1835) 12 July 1827
There’s a poem for everyone, have you found yours? Long ones, short ones, fat ones, thin ones, funny ones, sad ones . . . this month’s book group is all about poems.
We would like each person to try to have read a collection of poems by a living author and bring one to share at the meeting.
