In ZET GARDEN II artist Martin Zet focuses on each member of his family, his wife, himself and their four children. Each fortnight a film featuring a different member of his family will screen in Waygood’s Little Jewel Cinema. Martin Zet explained, “My family has 6 members: 4 children, my wife and me. I have been working with all of them, sometimes with their agreement, sometimes without. This is a chance to introduce results of this collaboration/exploration to the public. Each one will be in some sense the main character of one projection.”
Martin will bring his family across from the Czech Republic to Newcastle for the preview, and family negotiations permitting, the four children will sit in the shop window of the gallery (there is room just for four chairs there) during the evening of the preview. Martin Zet currently lives in Libusin, a village to the north of Prague, Czech Republic with his wife and children and Golden Labrador named Iphigenia. Waygood Founder and Creative Director, Helen Smith, met Martin Zet in Bucharest in 2006. She was at the Muzeul National de Art Contemporana, the major contemporary art gallery in Romania, which is located in a wing of what was Ceausescu’s Palace.

The authentic Italian restaurant Strada, Newcastle is currently holding a Summer Risotto Festival. The festival, which lasts until August 19, 2007, showcases Strada’s sumptuous signature dish in a variety of guises.
Located in the brand new development in Old Eldon Square, Blackett Street, Strada offers diners a contemporary and stylish setting in which to enjoy their full Italian menu - including hand made pizzas and fresh pasta as well as fish and meat dishes using only the finest fresh ingredients. However, one of the most popular dishes on the menu is their delizioso risotto.
The Risotto Festival aims to offer an extensive variety and choice as well as to celebrate all that is wonderful about this eclectic dish, the origins of which can be found in Northern Italy, in the Piedmont, Milan, Lombardy and Venetian areas, where rice rules the day!
Rice came to Italy sometime in the 10th century and the north of Italy took to rice farming four to five hundred years later, and have since made it their own regional signature dish. The area has remained the premier rice growing and rice eating areas of Italy to this day. In the same way that people in the rest of Italy put plates of piping hot pasta on the table at every main meal, northerners resort to rice. “Risotto is one of our favourite dishes,” said Strada Head Chef Richie Brent. “Not only because it can be prepared with ingredients that are delicate or hearty enough to make it a primo piatto or a main course, but because cooking the dish is almost as satisfying as eating it! We are all excited about the festival as it will give people the chance to sample a wide variety of different dishes, priced from £8.95.”
Risotto Festival favourites include a traditional Italian risotto with sautéed tiger prawns, zucchini, white wine, garlic and chilli and a risotto made with thyme roasted butternut squash, chilli and smoked pancetta bacon finished with parmesan, baby spinach and pine nuts.
Strada serves purely regional Italian wines, as well as beers and spirits, which have all been carefully chosen to complement the menu. In addition each table receives complimentary bottled purified water.
Strada would like to offer Culture Club members the chance to purchase 2 risotto dishes for the price of 1 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the life-span of the Risotto Festival.
Picture House Film, Art and Design at Belsay will be held at Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, Northumberland until Sept 30, 2007.
Curated by Judith King and Juha Huuskonen, the fifteen works of art form part of the groundbreaking exhibition of film, art and design specially commissioned from a range of leading artists, film directors, thespians, musicians and fashion designers. The list includes actress Tilda Swinton, film director Mike Figgis and fashion duo, Viktor and Rolf.
The historic nineteenth-century hall is the source of inspiration for the exhibition, with each artist first visiting Belsay to choose a location and then creating an installation in response to the site - be it the atmosphere, social history, architecture or location. Almost every room has been filled with objects, projected film, sound, smells or animation, and the five month long exhibition promises to offer visitors a unique experience.
When Belsay Hall was signed over to English Heritage, part of the agreement was that it should be left empty, only maintained and not dressed in any way. Every few years English Heritage uses this ‘blank canvas’ as a setting for themed exhibitions.
The exhibition is open from 10am to 5pm, daily.
Admission normally costs £8.50 for adults with concessions at £6.40 and children at £4.20 but Culture Club members can claim 2 tickets for the price of 1 with our great offer.
Following the success of its first Stage Experience project in 2006, the Sunderland Empire is delighted to announce the production for 2007, as the hit rock musical We Will Rock You.
Stage Experience is a two-week, not-for-profit, musical theatre summer school for 9 to 25 year olds, which seeks to give 150 young people in the North East the opportunity to perform or be part of a production team in a professionally produced musical.
Running at the Sunderland Empire from Sunday 22 July to Saturday 4 August, participants work alongside a professional director, musical director, choreographer and backstage crew to train in singing, dancing, acting and technical theatre. During the two weeks, participants learn all their songs, dances and lines – and then perform on the main stage for four performances of We Will Rock You from Thursday 2 to Saturday 4 August.
The time is the future, in a place that was once called Earth. Globalisation is complete! Everywhere the kids watch the same movies, wear the same fashions and think the same thoughts. On Planet Mall all musical instruments are banned. The Company Computers generate the tunes and everybody downloads them. Nothing is left to chance; hits are scheduled years in advance.
But Resistance is growing. Underneath the gleaming cities, down in the lower depths live the Bohemians. Rebels who believe that there was once a Golden Age, when the kids formed their own bands and wrote their own songs. They call that time The Rhapsody.
Legend persists that somewhere on Planet Mall instruments still exist. Somewhere, the mighty axe of a great and hairy guitar god lies buried deep in a rock. The Bohemians need a hero to find his axe and draw it from stone. Is the one who calls himself Galileo that man?
But the Ga Ga cops are also looking for Galileo and if they get him first they will surely drag him before the Killer Queen and consign him to oblivion across the Seven Seas of Rye. Who is Galileo? Where is the hairy one’s lost axe? Where is the place of living rock?
Culture Club members can see We Will Rock You at the Sunderland Empire with a fantastic £7.50 matinee ticket offer on Saturday August 4, 2007 at 2.30pm.
Culture Club members are invited to a Secret Curry Night on Monday August 6, 2007. Guests can enjoy a curry, a rice or naan, a pappadom and a small wine or small cobra or soft drink for only £10 per person for one night only. This deal is not available to walk ins and is available by advance reservation only. Choose from chicken tikka masala, chicken korma, lamb vindaloo, lamb bhuna or vegetable jhalfrezi curry only.
This week Culture Club members have the opportunity to submit photographs that will become part of a large painting. We’re also giving Culture Club members the chance to come to a special event to meet artist Glenn Cruddas, bring their photos and talk to him about the process of painting at 6pm on the evening of 14 August at Waygood Gallery & Studios, Harker¹s Building, Shields Road, Byker.
Whilst Nude_14962, by Glenn Cruddas is on display on the billboard outside of Waygood Studios as part of Waygood Gallery & Studio¹s Harker Herald project, Glenn will create a painting on a 26 metre (86 ft) by 2.5m (8ft) high canvas within the studios at Harkers Building, Byker. He is also offering the public the opportunity to bring in or send their photographs to be interpreted in his own style within the painting. Culture Club members are invited to send in images for Glenn to depict within the painting. These can be of any subject matter, portrait, landscape, a pet, an object or an abstract. Send images by email to tglennc@hotmail.com or go to the Harker Herald page on www.waygood.org and follow the links to see the work in progress.
Glenn adds: “People can send me photographs in any format and of anything they like, just so long as they understand that the image will be distorted in my painting. I am also interested if find out how people react to distortion of their images. My paintings start out as one thing but then undertake a journey to become something else, although this journey often involves return visits to certain stages of development, with each stage adding something, a trace or a memory that creates the final image”.
Harker Herald is a billboard displaying work by a different artist each month, outside Waygood Gallery & Studio’s temporary home in the Harker’s Building, 548-560 Shields Road, Byker. An accompanying calendar with postcards of each billboard image can be requested by emailing liping@waygood.org or ringing 0191 265 6857. For more information see www.waygood.org or ring Waygood Gallery & Studios on 0191 265 6857.
