Working from her studio in Gateshead, Christine produces beautiful sculptures with forms drawn strongly from nature. Christine has exhibited in some of the region’s best known galleries, and her work recently featured in the Christmas show at the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead. Christine’s work has featured in numerous books and magazines, and she has co-written a book on the use of glazes. Creative Camera Work

Creative Camera Work Digital Cameras were one of the top presents this Christmas, and millions of people snapped them up in the sales. But all too often we only use a few of the features on our cameras and never quite produce the photographs we would like. Culture Club has teamed up with leading photographer Wyn Barnes to create a special one-day digital photography workshop. The workshop will take place on Saturday, 16 February, starting at 10am at Ryton Community Centre.
Wyn Barnes left the secure world of finance to develop her interest in photography. Joining a photography course as a mature student changed Wyn’s life, not only honing her technical skills, but launching her on a new career. She now has her own studios in Ryton, and has developed significant expertise in photographing still life, macro and landscape subjects. Wyn’s expanding portfolio of images can be viewed online at www.wynbarnesimages.co.uk.
Wyn also runs workshops covering digital cameras and Photoshop, helping students to be more creative and master various techniques. The Workshops are hands on, practical, informal learning days.
The Culture Club workshop will include; setting up your camera and learning about the buttons, dials and shooting modes, composition rules, how to use the creative effects of light and speed, and practical demonstrations to show the effects that digital cameras can create.
Weather permitting, members will visit Bradley Garden Centre as the backdrop for the photo shoot. Using Photoshop, Wyn will show how to prepare images to obtain the best results.
The day will begin at Ryton Community Centre at 10am and will finish back at the Centre at 3pm. Members should arrange their own transport between Ryton Community Centre and Bradley Gardens. Culture Club members should bring their own cameras.
Places are limited so please ensure you apply quickly as allocation will be on a ‘first come first served’ basis. Applications must be received by Midday on Thursday, 17 January 2008. This workshop is for Culture Club members only. Either email info@thejournalcultureclub.co.uk or send a postcard to Wyn Barnes Photography Workshop, The Journal Culture Club, The Groat Market, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1ED, with your name, address, a daytime phone number and your Culture Club membership number

Fashion is 'Rubbish'

Fashion is 'Rubbish' When it comes to the crunch - there’s no such thing as rubbish, and Dalton Park, the North East’s biggest outlet shopping centre is going to prove just that. As part of their “going green” initiative, Dalton Park are inviting two artists from EDAN (East Durham Artists Network) to demonstrate how fashion can be created from the things we normally throw away.. The events take place on Wednesday, January 2 and Saturday, January 5.
Dalton Park are inviting the public to bring all their Christmas packaging to the workshops. Dalton Park will also be collecting packaging from all their stores, including used carrier bags, cardboard, polystyrene, parcel tape and bubble wrap. All this material will be the ‘fabric’ for the fashion workshops. You can also bring your old Christmas cards for recycling at Dalton Park – special bins for recycling cards can be found throughout the outlet.
Angela Sandwith, lecturer in design and technology in secondary education at Sunderland University will lead the workshops at Dalton Park, assisted by fellow EDAN artist Jac Howard. Angela is no stranger to creating ‘haute couture’ from unusual fabrics. One of her pieces, a colourful blazer made of crisp packets, hit the headlines following its launch at a New York exhibition.
The workshops will take place from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm on Wednesday, January 2 and Saturday, January 5 near the main entrance. All are very welcome to attend – but please note this is an unsupervised event so children must be accompanied at all times.
As an exclusive special treat for Culture Club members, there’s free tea or coffee at BB’s Coffee and Muffins on both the workshop days. Just show your membership card at the till.

Meet the Artists

Meet the Artists Following the success of the October ‘Meet the Artist’ at the Biscuit Factory, Culture Club has teamed up with the gallery to create another exclusive opportunity to meet two highly popular artists, Emma Holliday and Suzanne Chong. The event will take place on Thursday, January 24 at 6pm.
Emma Holliday makes her painting accessible to everyone. She likes people to be able to look at her pictures and not be confused or intimidated. Emma paints what she sees around her, and she is well known for her paintings of the best known urban, rural and seaside landscapes from the region. Emma also paints still life and portraits which are beautifully accurate, evoking a strong Edwardian feel. Emma often works outdoors, where she enjoys the interaction with passers by and the interest created by a working artist.
Suzanne Chong was born in Hong Kong and has studied in Hong Kong, Dundee and Newcastle. Suzanne re-models classical western images and Chinese motifs into a new symbolic order which results in a fascinating East meets West style.
Suzanne grew up during a period in which Hong Kong prospered greatly, Western lifestyle rapidly invaded the Chinese lifestyle and new values quickly started to erode the old ones. Suzanne’s works represent not only her feelings of alienation in a fast changing society but also her views and feelings towards Hong Kong Chinese culture and the traditional role of women.
Suzanne’s paintings are like Chinese embroidery; slow, subtle and delicate.
To join this special Culture Club event, either email info@thejournalcultureclub.co.uk or mail to: Culture Club Meet the Artist, The Journal, Groat Market, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1ED. You should include your name, address, daytime phone number, email and culture club membership number. All applications must be received by Midday on Thursday, January 17. Usual ncjMedia promotion rules apply, available at www.journallive.co.uk. This event is open to Journal Culture Club members only.
