Not for the faint hearted! ‘Apocalypse in the Asylum’ Brand New Alternative Rock Circus is coming to The Journal Tyne theatre on November 14 and Culture Club has three pairs of tickets to give away. Circus of Horrors is a blend of rock, horror and mayhem. A musical extravaganza that shocks the senses and makes you feel invigorated, with a stage full of bizarre freaks, burlesque dancers and amazing acrobatic gymnasts.
The Asylum, which is the third incarnation of the show, takes us to the end of 19th century Paris, where the twisted philanderer Doktor Haze has fled his native home of Transylvania, jumped shipped and is now planning to open a new Daring and Erotic show to take on the soon to be opened ‘Moulin Rouge’
Aimed at anyone with a slightly warped sense of humor the show follows the story of Doktor Haze and his attempts to open his new raunchy shocking show 'Blood Thirsty Burlesque' but having been deceived into buying an occupied asylum on the outskirts of Paris, the depraved immoral side of Doktor Haze soon emerges and takes control.
Liberation for the in-patients soon looses its appeal and it’s only going to be a matter of time before the liberated turn against the libertine.
Shocks, surprises and black humour with a huge uncontrollable cast of Burlesque Beauties, chasosmongers and some of the world’s greatest, grotesque, most daring and bizarre circus acts.

From the age of 10 growing up in a musical family, to her first professional gig aged 18 at the Wild West World theme park, Eva first meeting with her boyfriend and mentor Chris Biondo, a rabble-rousing rendition and recording at Blues Alley with Chuck Brown and culminating in her poignant and tragic death, Over The Rainbow pays a genuine and heartfelt tribute to a true artist who was not interested in fame and fortune, but wanted nothing more than to create beautiful music.

In a career that spans five decades, DJ Johnnie Walker has one of the most recognisable voices in radio. In an evening covering forty years of broadcasting, Johnnie will discuss his career highs and lows on Wednesday, October 15 at 7:30pm.
Johnnie's career began in 1966 on joining Radio England, but quickly made his name on moving to the pirate radio ship, Radio Caroline, where his listener figures tipped 20 million in August 1967 as government legislation effectively outlawed the station.
In 1976 he left BBC Radio 1 after a showdown with bosses over his comments that the Bay City Rollers were "musical garbage". Moving to San Francisco, he recorded a show that was broadcast on Radio Luxembourg and returning to the UK in the 1980s.
In 1997 Walker made his Radio 2 debut, and presented the drive time show until he was suspended by bosses when allegations of drug taking were made in a national newspaper. In 2003, having returned to his Radio 2 show, Walker announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer and would be taking time off to recover. He was awarded an MBE for services to broadcasting in 2006, and a year later published his autobiography. Tickets to hear the great man give a deeply personal account of what has not always been a charmed life, are priced £15 and can be obtained by contacting Gala Box Office on 0191 332 4041 or visiting the website at www.galadurham.co.uk.

In November, our Book Group will review Antonia Fraser’s ‘Gunpowder Plot’ and Martin Stephen’s ‘The Desperate Remedy’.
With a narrative that grips the reader like a detective story, Antonia Fraser’s ‘Gunpowder Plot’ brings the characters and events of the Gunpowder plot to life, telling the truth about Guy Fawkes’ plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament.
From the court of King James to the deadly underworld of Jacobean London, Martin Stephen’s ‘The Desperate Remedy’ is a tale of gunpowder, treason and plot so audacious it is scarcely believable: a catholic uprising, a violent insurrection, and a trail of gunpowder underneath the Houses of Parliament.
If you would like to take part in any of our book reviews, simply head to your local library or bookseller to get your hands on a copy of the book currently featured. Details can also be found at thejournalcultureclub.co.uk
The Culture Club Book Group meets every month at The Biscuit Factory, Stoddart Street. It’s free to attend and you can join in the discussion as little or as much as you like. You do not have to commit to attend every week and can come along as and when your schedule allows. You must be a Culture Club member to attend.
The book to be reviewed at each session is published in The Journal during the first week of each month and updated here at thejournalcultureclub.co.uk allowing up to 4 weeks for members to read the book before the Book Group meet.

The Tallantyre Gallery of Morpeth, Northumberland, is set to show the work of one of its finest and longest standing artists, Spanish painter, Royo when he visits the region for the first time ever to showcase his most recent exhibition ‘Mediterranean Light’.
Culture Club has one pair of VIP tickets to be won, including entry to the exhibition on Saturday, October 11, a complimentary bottle of bubbly and a signed brochure from the artist himself. Accompanied by Spanish delicacies such as tapas and sherry, and with the beautiful exhibits from Royo on show as well as the opportunity to meet the artist himself, there’s no better backdrop than the Tallantyre Gallery within which to get a flavour of Spain’s most current and credible artists.
Valencia-born Royo’s work has become a firm favourite on the walls of the Tallantyre Gallery. Painting since the age of nine, Royo’s recognisable style has matured over the years into work which represents a dramatic use of colour and ‘texturing’ which he uses to capture his subject matter - parallels have been made with Renoir and that of the Spanish master, Joaquin Sorolla with both being described as ‘painters of the light’.
The visit holds special resonance as one of Royo’s paintings ‘Floral Blouse’ was infamously stolen from the gallery this summer. Shrouded in mystery and after a series of investigations the painting is still missing so the gallery will be stepping up security measures for the duration of the exhibition!
Royo will be exhibiting over 20 original paintings at Tallantyre’s, and interest has already been drummed up around the exhibition opening as it will be his first ever visit to the region. A well-known face both internationally and on the London and Birmingham art scenes. Some of Royo’s work hangs alongside that of Matisse and Picasso in a number of the Mayfair Galleries, in London.
Royo’s ‘Mediterranean Light’ exhibition will be running from Saturday, October 11 to Saturday, October 18 and admission is free. Tallantyre Gallery is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm. For enquiries please contact art@tallantyre.co.uk or call 01670 517 214.
