Culture Club and The Sage Gateshead have got together to create two great ticket offers. H.K. Gruber, a conductor, composer and a cabaret-style performer is presenting a programme that includes Stravinsky, Weill and John Adams, as well as his own compositions on Thursday, January 31, and on Saturday, February 2, 80s icon Boy George is making his long awaited return to the live concert stage. There are a limited number of two for the price of one tickets available for each concert, so call The Sage Gateshead Ticket Office on 0191 443 4661and quote 1134 when booking. George’s show is packed with his best known hits from Culture Club - including Karma Chameleon and Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?; plus songs from his solo career, and covers delivered in his very distinctive vocal style. In the show George talks openly about his years as a pop and fashion icon, his relationships, the musical collaborations and the truth behind the tabloid headlines. In his own words “I am probably one of the best known people in the world and not necessarily for the right reasons”. H.K. Gruber was a member of the Vienna Boys Choir, then a professional double bass player and is now a composer, a conductor and a larger than life performer. In this fun and fascinating programme (a rare chance to see the orchestra conducted by the composer) he explores the world of cabaret, with some of the great Kurt Weill songs, supplemented by the theatrical works of Stravinsky and American John Adams. Gruber’s own work, incorporating cabaret elements, takes you into a world where horror and comedy meet in whirlwind juxtapositions. There’s also a pre-concert talk with the conductor at 6.30pm, free to ticket holders.

In February the Culture Club Book Group will be discussing Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent. From the seed of an actual attempt to blow up the Greenwich Observatory in 1894, Conrad created one of his most tense and chilling plots. Repulsive characters and corrupt caricatures form a satire on English society that is sharpened into focus with a portrait of late Victorian family life. Joseph Conrad is recognised as one of the greatest novelists in the English language. Born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski in 1857 in the Ukraine to upper class Polish parents, he was orphaned in childhood and at sixteen became a sailor. His adventurous life on the sea, traveling the world with the French and English merchant navy, provided rich source material for his later writing. The Book Club will meet on Wednesday, Februay 6 from 6pm to 7.30pm at The Biscuit Factory, Stoddart Street, Newcastle, for further information contact Amelia Joicey by email at Amelia.Joicey@mlanortheast.org.uk Readers are expected to source their own copy of The Secret Agent. Newcastle and Gateshead libraries both have multiple copies, and many retailers have special offers on this novel.
