Fashion students rise to the occasion for bakers

Fashion students rise to the occasion for bakers Bread will never go out of fashion in the North East…especially now that family baker Warburtons has linked up with the School of Design at Northumbria University.
The region’s best selling baker, Warburtons, makes a wide variety of different products but is still best known for its white loaves that come in distinctive blue, orange and green ‘wax’ wrappers. The traditional waxed paper is great for keeping bread fresh. But thanks to students at Northumbria it now also has a second life – as a creative fashion statement.
Seventy third-year fashion degree students have taken up a challenge from Warburtons to turn the wrapping paper into eye-catching, contemporary clothes.
The results include all manner of garments, including dresses, shirts, a bolero and even a couple of corsets!
School of Design senior lecturer, Chris Hodge, said: “Warburtons wax wrap is an unusual but interesting material to work with. The students have applied many different techniques, from folding, pleating, sticking, sewing and knitting, to come up with some stunning designs.”
A ‘tea time’ exhibition of the designs will be held at 4pm on March 13 in the foyer of Northumbria University’s award-winning City Campus East building in Newcastle, and Culture Club has five pairs of tickets for the event. Tickets will be allocated on a strictly first come first served basis. Applications for tickets should be emailed to info@thejournalcultureclub.co.uk or mailed to The Journal Culture Club, ncjMedia, The Groat Market, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 1ED. Applications must arrive by Midday on Thursday, March 6.
Angie Turnbull, who is based at Warburtons Newburn Bakery in Newcastle, said: “Northumbria’s School of Design has an international reputation and going by what the students have produced from our bread wrappers it’s entirely deserved!”
Warburtons has one of the best known and respected brands in the food industry. The company was started in a small shop in Bolton 1876 and today is run by the fifth generation of the same family. It has 13 bakeries across the UK, including two in North East England.
A ‘tea time’ exhibition of the designs will be held at 4pm on March 13 in the foyer of Northumbria University’s award-winning City Campus East building in Newcastle. The team judged to have produced the best design will also be presented with £300 by Warburtons, which will go towards final year projects.
