Jazz has been described as “the sound of surprise” because it’s never the same twice. And it doesn’t get more surprising than Jazz North East’s ‘On the Outside’ Festival, taking place from Jun 6 – 8, 2008 because the musicians have no idea in advance what they’re going to play.
Organiser Paul Bream explains, “We invite a group of the world’s leading free improvisers to stay for three days, working in combinations with players they may have never met before. This is a high wire act without a safety net, and should appeal to anybody who believes that great art has to take risks.”
Top players from the USA, Europe and the UK (including Tyneside bass virtuoso Andy Champion) will appear in around twenty different groupings, from duos right up to an ‘everybody on stage’ blow-out. “This is a totally unique Festival,” says Paul, “and it can be a challenge for both the musicians and the audience – but for anybody who appreciates the highest level of cutting-edge creativity, it’s an absolute must.”
We have 2 pairs of tickets to the opening event on June 6, 2008 to give away to lucky Culture Club members.
Friday June 6, 2008 (7.30 – 11.00pm), Saturday June 7 (2.00 – 5.30pm and 7.30 – 11.00pm), Sunday June 8 (2.00 – 5.30pm and 7.30 – 10.30pm. The Round, Lime Street, Newcastle. For more information and ticket reservations contact Jazz North East on 0191 234 2965 or info@jazznortheast.co.uk
Thursday 29th May in Hall One, 7.30pm
The sheer drive and energy of a McCoy Tyner performance has to be seen and heard to be believed. Since his crucial contribution to the great John Coltrane Quartet of the 1960s, and his own spectacular band of the 70s, Tyner has been a pivotal figure in the evolution of jazz, a hugely influential pianist whose rhythmic impetus and creative spirit is simply awesome. His current trio is joined by one of the most complete saxophonists of today, and a stalwart of Blue Note's roster: Joe Lovano combines the sound and swing of the great tenor players of the past with the inventive vision of a true musical explorer.
Tickets normally cost £16.50 but we have a pair of tickets to give away to a lucky Culture Club member in this week's competition.

Making a big Impression on visitors at The Bowes Museum this summer is the work of the acclaimed artist Sisley.
The season’s major exhibition, Alfred Sisley: Impressionist Landscapes, is the first major show devoted to this leading Impressionist to take place in the North East, and the first outside London for 50 years. It opens on Saturday 17 May and runs until Sunday 21 September.
Born in Paris to English parents, Sisley’s talents were appreciated by his lifelong friends Monet and Renoir, with whom he studied, and his art is now appreciated worldwide.
This display, which includes loans from private collections and museums, explores Sisley’s captivation with the landscape of the Parisian suburb of Port-Marly and the towns along the River Loing. Port-Marly provided Sisley with the inspiration for some of his most famous and celebrated images. This body of work will be explored with the inclusion of Port-Marly under Snow, from a private collection and long term loan to The Bowes Museum.
To mark the occasion we’ve arranged a guided tour around the exhibition, exclusively for Culture Club members. The event will take place on Tuesday 27 May at 2.30 and includes complimentary admission to the Museum and the opportunity to be guided by an expert.

On the Eve of World Fairtrade Day - 9 May, Nick Francis, director of the controversial and thought provoking “Black Gold,” will attend a special screening of his film which exposes the dark truth behind that morning latte we all rely on to help us face the day ahead. Nick together with his brother Mark were prompted to make this, their first film when it was announced at the end of 2002 that Ethiopia faced yet another devastating famine. Despite a booming worldwide coffee industry, worth in excess of $80 billion, Ethiopian coffee farmers were facing bankruptcy, extreme poverty and starvation. The pair spent two and half years following Meskela on his worldwide travels to secure buyers for his co-operative's world-class coffee at a fair price.
Following this award-winning documentary (which has been shown around the world and caused a stir wherever it has been played) will be a discussion led by Nick covering the many issues raised.
Culture Club members who would like to see this film at Newcastle Civic Centre on May 9, starting at 7.30pm, can benefit from a £2 discount on their ticket, normally priced at £7.

The event takes place on May 7 at 6pm at Northern Stage.

It’s almost guaranteed that as someone enters the Lit & Phil for the first time they will need to stand back and take it all in. It’s quite an amazing place. The Lit & Phil opened in 1825 and unlike many buildings of that era it has not become a bank or solicitors’ office but has remained a library. The magnificent reading rooms retain their charm and the extensive collection of books grows by over 1000 each year.
Attached to the Lit & Phil by a small internal bridge is the Mining Institute, housed within the elegant Gothic building of Neville Hall. As you open the door from the Lit & Phil you will enter the Nicholas Wood Memorial Library, the beautiful interior illuminated by a high arched skylit ceiling and stained glass windows. Step into the fantastic lecture theatre that offers perfect acoustics and an intimate atmosphere, clearly arranged to house scientific discourse.
We have organised a Culture Club guided tour of these two buildings on Thursday June 12 at 6pm.
