We’ve negotiated a great ticket offer for Culture Club members – and arranged for you to meet the director and the cast!
In the early eighties, Mark and Angela were the North East’s answer to Romeo & Juliet.
The teenage sweethearts planned to run away together but their romance ended when the Gateshead girl left the lad from Newcastle standing in vain at ‘their spot’, under the lamps at the middle of the Tyne Bridge. Now, 20 years on, with his elderly father in hospital and Angela caring for her ill mother, Mark returns to the North East looking for reconciliation and to re-kindle some old relationships. Is this his last chance?
From the writer of Gala’s 2007 success Beamish Boy, this brand new play mines a similar seam of North East culture, exploring themes of family, regret, missed opportunities and the enduring strength of relationships. Culture Award Winner Katie Doherty’s evocative and beautifully crafted music entwines perfectly with the mood and passion of the dialogue, giving this tender, heart-warming and humorous play a distinctive feel.
On Wednesday September 24, 2008 at 6:15pm, The Gala Theatre is offering Culture Club members the chance to catch Get Off At Gateshead’s director Simon Stallworthy, and cast members in conversation to find out how and why the play came to be written. Drinks will be served in Gala’s warm and friendly Intervals bar after the pre-show event, to give you time to get refreshed before the show.
Entry to the pre show event is free of charge, and tickets for Get Off At Gateshead on this night are available to Culture Club members at the reduced price of just £10 (usual price £13). To book tickets contact Box Office on 0191 332 4041 and quote Culture Club. Places to the pre-show event are limited. Book now to avoid disappointment.
Get Off At Gateshead runs from September 18 – 27, 2008.

From the endurance of training through to nerves on the starting line, finding your rhythm to trying to overtake Scooby Doo in the last mile, then crossing the all-important finish line with your head held high - ultimately, Run for me reveals what makes us who we are, runners or not.

Culture Club members and their guests will also each receive a limited edition signed poster produced to promote the launch of the film.

What is contemporary poetry? Who are the leading writers? How do poems work?
Event host and poet, Paul Batchelor* will try to answer these questions, by offering an informal introduction to contemporary poetry. Paul will look at some leading contemporary poets – from Seamus Heaney to Simon Armitage, from Tom Paulin to Selima Hill – and consider the different kinds of poetry being written today. Whether you’re already a poetry lover, or just interested in discovering something new, why not come along to find out more.
The talk will take place on Sunday August 31, 2008 from 6.30 – 7.00 at Live Theatre. Refreshments will be provided.
Following this talk you will hear from two brilliant Irish poets, Michael Longley and Colette Bryce.
Michael Longley is widely regarded as one of the finest poets of his generation winning the Whitbread Poetry Award, T.S. Eliot Prize and the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. A master of lyric poetry’s perennial themes – love, nature, elegy – Longley has also tackled the darkest of subjects, including the First World War, the Holocaust, and the Northern Irish ‘Troubles’. He will read from Collected Poems (Cape, 2006) as well as new work.
Colette Bryce was born in Derry and currently lives in Newcastle, having been the North East Literary Fellow 2005 – 2007. She has won the National Poetry Competition and the Aldeburgh First Collection Prize. Colette’s poetry is distinguished by its subtle, haunting music, and its exploration of crisis-points that reveal startling new perspectives. She will launch her third collection, Self Portrait in the Dark (Picador, 2008) at this exciting event.

With the 2008 Beijing Olympics taking place in August; it seems timely to turn our attention to understanding a little more about one of the fastest growing and largest countries in the world; China. And what’s even better is that you don’t have to be remotely sporty to take part! This month, The Journal Culture Club’s book group reviews Will Hutton’s “The Writing on the Wall; China and the West in the 21st Century”
To the west, China is a waking economic giant, poised to dominate the world. But, argues Will, we have consistently exaggerated and misunderstood the threat - and the consequences could be grave. In The Writing on the Wall, Will Hutton discusses the probability of China attaining the baton of global leadership as the new superpower of the 21st century. However, if the 21st century is going to be Chinese, Hutton argues that their leaders must share the same values as the West such as a belief in the judiciary, freedom of the press, independent accountability and democracy. However, if the 21st century is going to be Chinese, Hutton argues that their leaders must share the same values as the West such as a belief in the judiciary, freedom of the press, independent accountability and democracy. The West for its part, must not fear China’s growth, but should support the changes the country if facing and at the same time reaffirm its belief in globalization, their institutions and the rule of law. Will Hutton believes our world has never been more interdependent, and for China and the West his message is clear: the writing is on the wall.
Will Hutton is chief executive of the Work Foundation and a columnist for the Observer; where he was editor, then editor-in-chief for four years. He began his career in journalism as economics correspondent for the BBC’s Newsnight and for the Guardian.
He is the author of the best selling The State We’re In, The State to Come and The World We’re In.
“The Writing on the Wall could be the most important book you read this year… powerful and eloquent” The Age
“Hutton's handling of the complex Chinese economic puzzle is refreshingly straightforward. China, as we all vaguely know, will be very important very soon.” Sunday Herald
“A big, booming book bristling with combination punches” Independent
“an important book on a huge theme. It is also far and away Hutton’s best work. The individual elements are not new. But its breadth, not just of ambition, but of vision is impressive” Financial Times
“this is Hutton’s most provocatively enjoyable work to date” Sunday Telegraph
“There is much to be learned by reading the Writing on the Wall” Guardian
The book group will meet on Wednesday 6 August at The Biscuit Factory, Stoddart Street (6pm to 7.30pm).
