Culture Club members can attend a lecture by Frances Bacon at Northumbria University on Thursday, February 26 at 6pm.
Francis Bacon is widely recognised as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. In this talk ongoing research into Bacon’s materials and techniques will be discussed. Bacon used a variety of different paints including oils, household emulsion and spray paints, as well as more unconventional additions such as sand and dust. A range of different scientific techniques are being used to identify materials from paintings by Bacon, which will be described in the lecture, along with some preliminary results. The aim of this research is to assist with the authentication of paintings, and to guide the future conservation of these works.
Culture Club members have the opportunity to win one of three great prizes to celebrate the launch of Fair-trade Fortnight which this year begins Monday, February 23 through to Sunday, March 8. Newcastle Fairtrade Partnership and fair trade lender Shared Interest are working in conjunction with the Tyneside cinema on Pilgrim Street to combine film, music and fashion for an event that will also play host to Divine Chocolate farmers from Ghana.

Culture Club members can take a trip back in time as we join The Time Bandit’s for another exciting historic tour. On Saturday March 28, at 11am, we will visit St. Andrew's in Bolam, one of the finest county parish churches, a Saxon foundation with a long and interesting history. We will hear about the church and also Kate of Harnham, tempestuous beauty of the Civil War era, who was denied burial in consecrated ground. We will then proceed for a tour of Bolam Lake looking at natural as well as narrative history.

Spice Bollywood on Low Street, Sunderland is the city's first totally authentic Indian restaurant, serving made-to-order Punjabi cuisine. Culture Club members are invited to come along to a cookery demonstration on Tuesday, February 17 at 7pm. You will learn how to cook some traditional favorites, followed by a three course authentic meal.
Members can enjoy specialties such as Bollywood Chicken Curry, Aloo tikki, tarka dall, tandoori breads and House Kheer, which are all included in the three course menu. You will also have the opportunity to sample the food being demonstrated for only £7.50 for the evening.
The three course menu which will be available on the evening will be:
Starter: Bollywood Platter (aloo tikki, vegetable pakora, onion bahji, tandoori spiced chicken wings and chick pea curry)
Main Course: Bollywood Chicken Curry (open to suggestion on the night) served with tarka dall, aloo gobi mutter, house pilau rice with a selection of tandoori breads.
