Win Tickets to see The Avison Ensemble and Division Lobby perform

Win Tickets to see The Avison Ensemble and Division Lobby perform Culture Club members have the chance to win one of two pairs of tickets to attend a unique concert as The Avison Ensemble will be working in partnership with Division Lobby to bring music in unchartered styles to the Northeast in the Charles Avison Tercentenary year. The concert will take place on Sunday, September 27, at King’s Hall, Newcastle.

A unique, groundbreaking ensemble was established this year to explore hitherto unchartered territory in improvised music. The brainchild of leading lutenist Paula Chateauneuf, this group is one of the fruits of a research project delving into a neglected area of performance practice. An all-star line-up of early musicians has been assembled specially for a series of concerts, including performances at the Southbank Centre London and Concertgebouw Bruges, and will be in existence for a short time only.

The excitement of improvised performance is an experience long enjoyed by jazz audiences. The Division Lobby brings the exhilaration of spontaneous music creation to the early music platform, with colourful and varied programmes consisting entirely of music extemporized in 17th-century Italian traditions. This is not “crossover” or “fusion” but improvisation, pure and simple, involving richly ornamental techniques developed by the finest musicians working in the courts, churches, and noble houses of 'seicento' Italy. The Division Lobby transforms 17th-century musical sketches into dazzling virtuosic performances, using harpsichords, lutes, violins, lira da braccio and cornetti.
