An audience with Claire Morgan at the Laing Art Gallery - Oct 2008
Wednesday’s evening with Claire Morgan ‘wow’d’ us as she took us through her 5 year career to date before we stood in awe at her latest instillation. Gone With the Wind is a response to the act of running within a crowd and consists of around 10,000 suspended wild flower seeds and a Kittiwake Gull.
FOOD FOR FREE – Forage in the forest wild food Event - Jun 2008
Members attended a Wildfood event in the 5,000-acre beauty-spot of Hamsterley Forest. Led by ranger and wildfood fan Neil Taylor, activities included a forage to identify natural food stuffs like leaves, roots and even bark, before a tasting session at the forest visitor centre. Menu offerings included hawthorn leaves, other spring greens and nettle soup – all truly organic and thoroughly nourishing!
Blooming marvellous gardens tour - Jun 2008
Members were given an informative and picturesque tour around the gardens at Belsay by head gardener Sarah-Jo Hindhaugh. They heard the history behind the garden and its magnificent array of plant species, saw the rhododendron garden in full bloom and the unique climate of the Quarry Garden and learnt about how the Estate is cared for and preserved by the dedicated team of gardeners.
Horrid Henry - Feb 2008
Culture Club Members were invited to visit the Horrid Henry Exhibition at Seven Stories, the day before the exhibition opened to the public. The event was a huge hit with children and adults, and we could have allocated the tickets twice over!
High School takes to the Ice - Jan 2008
A group of lucky Culture Club children won tickets to see High School Musical on Ice. The group first saw the show, and then met the ice dancing stars at an exclusive VIP reception.

A group of art-loving Culture Club members took a day trip to The Upfront Gallery in Cumbria, courtesy of ERB Coach Services. The members were amongst the first to see an exhibition of 150 Cumbrian Artists.
Behind the Scenes at mima - Jan 2008
Culture Club members were invited behind the scenes at mima. Members were taken on a private tour of the Bauhaus exhibition and got to meet the galleries conservator. Members also visited the stores to see artworks not normally on display to the public.
Win With Washington Wetland Centre - Jan 2008
15 Culture Club members braved the January chill to take an exclusive guided tour of Washington Wetland Centre. Members saw some of the Centre's most stunning winter visitors, as well as the permanent resident birds. The tour also inlcuded explanations of insect hibernation and habitat preservation.

Ten lucky Culture Club winners got to see Northern Stage's Christmas Carol. Each winner received four tickets. Members loved the event - "A super production" said one, and "An outstanding show" said another.

Two Culture Club members got to meet Journal Cartoonist Nicholas. As part of the discussion, the members helped shape the next days cartoon. The event was covered in the Journal on 13 December.
Behind the Scenes at Northern Print - Dec 2007
Culture Club members got the chance to make their own Christmas Cards at Northern Print studios, using the monoprint printing method. The event was a great success and included a tour of the gallery and seeing printmakers at work in the studio.

Casanova at Northern Stage - Nov 2007
Two lucky Culture Club members won a fantastic Casanova prize, including a pre-show backstage tour of Northern Stage; a walk on the set of Casanova; a view of the production’s costumes and a pair of tickets to the show on Wednesday 24 October with complimentary interval drinks.
Faustus Event - Nov 2007
On Thursday, November 8 Culture Club members were invited to a special post-show talk with members of the cast and crew following the performance of Faustus, and Culture Club members also got a full-price ticket for just £8.
Heart of Theatre - Nov 2007
Culture Club Members found out how the magic of theatre is created, when they took a special visit to Northern Stage's rehearsal room and workshop. Culture Club members met Designer Neil Murray who talked about how models are transformed into real sets and props, and how lavish costumes are produced from original drawings, and Director Erica Whyman explained how she works with actors to bring a script to life. Culture Club members found out why stage technicians are called the crew (originally sailors were employed in theatres as there was such a need for people to work effectively with ropes) and why actors are called by their surnames (avoids confusion when you have two actors with the same first name). Erica Whyman explained how the rehearsal room is marked out to reflect the stage, and the importance of always knowing where the centre of the stage is (the centre line) to ensure that once the production is transferred to the stage the audience get the very best sight lines to the action. Neil Murray, the show's designer explained why a story board of the show is created, and how drawings are transferred to a scale model and how the model is rescaled to life-size by expert carpenters and painters. Wardrobe Supervisor Alison Stringer showed members the lavish costumes being created from original patterns, and how costumes from other shows are adapted to look totally fresh and new.

The Journal - The first 175 years - May 2007
To celebrate The Journal's 175th Birthday we organised a photography exhibition at The Discovery Museum displaying a host of stunning images borrowed from the paper's archives. Culture Club members and a selection of other VIPs were able to enjoy the exhibition in a special preview event before it was open to the public.
Culture Club Visit to Cragside - Apr 2007
Culture Club members were treated to a behind the scenes tour of newly renovated Cragside. They explored the building and then after lunch were given a tour of the gardens and grounds by the head gardener.
‘Magic’ night out at Metro Radio - Mar 2007
Culture Club joined forces with Metro Radio & Magic 1152 to offer members an exclusive behind the scenes tour at the stations' £1.5 million state of the art building at 55 Degees North in the heart of Newcastle.
Metro Radio's lunch-time presenter Mark Thorburn was the host for the evening which included a welcome by Managing Director Sally Aitchison, who explained how the radio stations work and why Metro Radio is the brand leader in the commercial radio market. This was followed by a tour of the studios to discover the secrets of how a radio show is put together, with advice from presenter Nightowl's Alan Robson.

Members attended The Spice Cube Restaurant in The Gate for a talk by head chef, followed by a 2 course gourmet dinner. Guests were invited to ask questions as Dinesh Rawat demonstrated how to make the 2 dishes and explained the health benefits behind the different ingredients.

A Moment In Time – Neil Atkinson Photography Event - Nov 2006
Members enjoyed an evening with photographer, Neil Atkinson. He shared some anecdotes from the filming of his TV series, A Moment in Time, talked about future projects and imparted technical tips, hints and advice. All members who attended were rewarded with an exclusive print.

They were treated to a tour of the newly reconstructed Masonic Hall and had the chance to question curatorial staff and reconstruction experts. 'Shore' - performed on Bamburgh Beach - May 2006
Members were invited to attend a performance of Shore, a dance installation, choreographed by Cathy Marston on Bamburgh Beach. We organised transport and an after show reception in Bamburgh Castle where members could chat to Cathy, the performers, the composer and poet who wrote the lyrics. A true 'money can't buy' experience made even more special by the dramatic backdrop.
