Culture Club tour of archaeological excavations at Arbeia 23 Jul 2009
Culture Club members enjoyed a guided tour of the current archaeological excavations at Arbeia Roman Fort in South Shields on Thursday, July 23. Graeme Stobbs, keeper of field archaeology, gave an introduction to the Roman fort before showing members the excavation site and some of the finds unearthed so far. This summer, archaeologists have begun work on the first brand new areato be opened up for excavation work at Arbeia Roman Fort in over 25 years. They hope to find the collapsed remains of the fort wall, the defensive ditches that surrounded the fort, and buildings belonging to the civilian settlement that grew up outside the fort walls.
